Kumba Iron Ore Classic in the Northern Cape
News Release / 23.09.2013

Kumba Iron Ore was the gracious host of the 2013 Kumba Iron Ore Classic, which took centre stage of the country’s sporting calendar on Saturday, 21 September 2013. The event was held in Kathu, and is a seeding event for both the National Classic and Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour.
What was meant to be a warm spring morning turned into near freezing temperatures at the start, with the wind-chill factor taking the real temperature below freezing. Nevertheless the roads around Kathu greeted riders amiably with the course being very flat on an out-and-back route. As is always the case with this type of route setup, the wind will be your friend and your foe and today was no exception.
The icy headwind from the turnaround point back to the finish provided the perfect opportunity for three riders to escape and sprint it out for the finish. Rynard Butler beat Johan Rabie and Nicholas Dougall who came in second and third respectively. The women’s race was more closely contested and saw Anriëtte Schoeman in front to claim first prize in the 105km followed shortly by Maruska Matthee and Erna du Toit.
Apart from the fact that this race is an official seeding race for The Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour it should be one of the not-to-be-missed races on the calendar, particularly for Gauteng riders as Kathu is an easy 6 hour drive from Johannesburg. The region provides ample tourist and relaxation opportunities and the hospitality at Namakwari Lodge is genuine 4 star quality. The race organisers also provide heaps of entertainment, a kiddies area and kiddies races to keep the whole family entertained. This years’ event featured live performances by Izak Davel and a variety of local performers as well skateboard activities and demonstrations.
Well-known model and international movie star, Vanessa Haywood, participated in the 105km race. Speaking as the Kumba Iron Ore Classic ambassador, Haywood said that she was delighted to have participated in the race since she is a hugely passionate cyclist.
“I’ve always conceded myself as a seasoned cyclist, but today I realised that no one can compete against the scorching sun of Kathu,” she laughed.
“The cycle challenge has been such a highlight for this province; it is wonderful that Kumba Iron Ore is bringing all the communities in Northern Cape together. This is definitely a good initiative as it promotes a healthy lifestyle.”
