Gravity Play Sports Announces 2014 Adventure Xstream Dates & Venues

News Release / 24.01.2014

Gravity Play Sports is pleased to announce the dates and locations for the 2014 Adventure Xstream Adventure Race Series including the series most popular venue, Moab, Utah.

Gravity Play’s commitment to the sport of multi-sport racing continues as the Adventure stream Adventure Race Series advances into its 14th year as the Rocky Mountain Region’s premiere Adventure Racing Series.  Combining a multitude of outdoor sports including; mountain biking, kayaking, trail running, ropes challenges, navigation and more.  Gravity Play Sports provides experienced athletes as well as the weekend warrior an outdoor venue for competition and personal achievement.

Nestled into the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the 2014 spectacular race venues include:  Moab, UT; Summit County, CO; Buena Vista, CO; and Glenwood Springs, CO.  Solo racers or teams will be challenged in a number of disciplines such as mountain biking, kayaking, trail running, ropes challenges, navigation and more. This year also features a new 4-person relay team option.

This is not your typical mud run or obstacle course,” says Will Newcomer, AXS Race Director.  “You will be challenged over a 50+mile course with various multi-sport disciplines and have to navigate an unmarked course. These are real, authentic adventure races,” Newcomer adds.

The Sport races are approximately 50+mile (6-12 hours) in length. The 24-30 hour race course covers 100+ miles of terrain.

Obstacle Races are NOT Adventure Races

While adventure races could be called the grandfather (you know, the wiser, more mature version) of obstacle races, adventure races are some of the most grueling endurance events in the world. They require the use of various modes of transport such as running, map-reading/navigation along an unmarked course, kayaking, mountain biking, rappelling or other ropes challenges, swimming, as well as tackling a host of other natural obstacles.

Created by Mark Burnett (Survivor, The Apprentice), Eco-Challenge was the first worldwide, televised adventure race and is considered by many to have put the sport on the radar for athletes all over the world to aspire to compete in. From 1995 to 2002, the format was refined and tweaked in an attempt to make events more difficult, exciting and TV-friendly, in the process defining adventure racing as a team sport featuring a mix of multiple different disciplines.

Most adventure races today range in length from a one day (~50 mile course) to multi-day events while obstacle races are shorter (most are less than 10miles and the most popular are only 3 miles in length) and feature man-made obstacles & mud pits to crawl through.
