There's a great weekend ahead for the adventurous-minded on the 5th/6th April in Coniston. The Silva10 is on Saturday evening - a 10k trail race - but run at night, so listen for the Lakeland sounds of trickling becks and raging waterfalls. Then on Sunday, there's the Haglöfs Open 5 Adventure race, with running and mountain biking over some of Lakeland's most popular fells.

The grand finale in the SILVA10 series brings the racing back to Open Adventure's back yard. It's a great introduction to night running, with clear signage and a friendly sweeper keeping spirits up at the back of the race. But for elite racers, their challenge is to make it a speedy 10k on rough terrain. Starting in Coniston village, the route includes woodland trails, slate quarries, and a fast descent thought the Coppermines valley.

This is not a route for a personal best - at night, off-road, and with the natural obstacles of the Lake District - but it will be a memorable one. Event planner Nicki Barron says "The route I've chosen pulls together some of my favourite local trails, all in the shadow of The Old Man of Coniston. Expect the thrill of night running in challenging Lakeland conditions, some tough competition at the front, and plenty of relaxed chatter at the back."

Then there's the final event in this winter's Haglöfs Open5 Adventure Race Series. In Open Adventure's heartland of the Lake District, local planner Ant Cooper has taken on the challenge of finding places you wouldn't necessarily see.

Adventure racing is a mix of mountain biking & running, with competitors navigating their own route choice to control locations, and aiming to maximise the points gained by visiting those controls, and racers can be out on the course for up to 5 hours. Special briefings are held at registration for those who haven't raced before, where you can ask questions and pick up racing tips from event director James Thurlow.

Running, there will be a real flavour of the old mining days, and riding is over varied terrain giving a great workout for the more adventurous. For those who want to explore gentler terrain, that's on offer too.

It promises to be a weekend of excitement, leaving racers wanting more from this stunning place in the heart of the Lake District.
