Challenge Wanaka long distance triathlon in New Zealand’s South Island has taken out the Triathletes’ Choice Award for the World’s Most Scenic Race at this year’s Triathlon Business International Awards in Los Angeles yesterday.

Part of the global Challenge Family series of triathlons, Challenge Wanaka is based in New Zealand’s southern alps with a course surrounded by the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area. Each February it attracts over 1,500 athletes from around the world to take on its tough, honest course and enjoy the spectacular scenery.

Challenge Wanaka race director, Victoria Murray-Orr said it was wonderful for the race to get such international recognition, made even more so by the fact the award was athlete voted.

“Athletes have the choice of hundreds of races around the world and I know the Wanaka community will be very proud that their town has been voted the most beautiful place in the world to come and race,” she said. “With our stunning scenery, quiet roads, crystal clear water and relaxed Kiwi vibe, Wanaka is definitely hard to beat as a training and racing destination.”

“It is fantastic accolade for the Lake Wanaka region to have Challenge Wanaka recognised by athletes around the world for having the most spectacular and outstanding scenery,” said Lake Wanaka Tourism CEO, James Helmore. “We are lucky enough to live and work in this amazing location and there is no doubt this stunning environment inspires athletes to get out and be active. It really is a triathlete and multisport heaven!”

This year’s Challenge Wanaka takes place on Sunday 22 February with athletes from 18 nations taking on both the half and full distance triathlon, including a 30-strong pro field competing for the $80,000 prize purse.
