Adventure Races Keeping Central Coast Lake Active Despite Drought
News Release / 19.03.2015

The All Out Adventure Series has utilized Santa Margarita Lake for over a decade, and despite the lake being at a horrifying 17.5%, the event will be able to return this year, offering kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, navigation and team challenges.
The race will start at 7 am on Saturday, March 28 and flow through three waves of 80 participants that morning. They receive a map and a passport for marking checkpoints assigned throughout the course. Two distances are offered: a 2-4 hour race and a 6-hour one with ropes and additional navigation elements.
Online registration closes Tuesday, but day-of will be available. Entries start at $120 and include shirt, finisher prize, free beer and kayak rental (for the short race). Kids are welcome to race with adults. May 9th, the third event in the series will return, taking participants on a 12-hour adventure finishing in downtown San Luis Obispo.
A year ago, the lake made headlines because its commissary was feeling the economic pinch of the diminished boating and fishing traffic. Hosting an annual adventure race not only boosts business for the commissary and lake on the weekend due to racers camping and staying at the lake, but it has historically brought visitation levels up from years before the race attended.
“It’s a perfect fusion of public lands and events,” says production manager Kristin Horowitz, “We’re able to show people some beautiful local resources and bring in revenues for them year over year – which makes them eager to have us back each year and make it worth it for us to do so.” Will the race, in which kayaking is a major component suffer? “Of course we’d love to see a deep, healthy lake,” says race director Yishai Horowitz, “but with the popularity of mud runs, we are excited to have people navigate all new terrain resulting from the drought.”
