The Western Cape’s most exciting open water swim, the Sanlam Cape Mile will boast with a tremendous prize purse increase of R90 000, taking the 2016 prize purse to a total of R140 000.

Taking place at the pristine Eikenhof Dam at the Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape) on Sunday, 07 February 2016, the Sanlam Cape Mile is an exciting open water swim.  Entrants can choose between an exhilarating mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.

“We are extremely proud to be able to offer such a substantial prize purse increase for the second annual Sanlam Cape Mile,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports.  “Prize money will be on offer to the top ten swimmers in the Elite Male and Female categories. The first finishers in these categories will take home R20 000.  With the Olympics taking place in Rio later in 2016, I am sure this prize money will come in handy.  Continuing our support of schools and clubs, we’re pleased to offer an amount of R6000 to the school and club that boasts with the most swimmers competing on the day.  We are thankful to our title sponsor, Sanlam for their unwavering support without which the increased prize purse would not have been possible. ”

“This event is perfectly aligned with our brand values as Wealthsmiths, because open-water swimming requires dedication, meticulous preparation and a high-performance culture, which is not unlike the process we go through in managing clients’ investments,” says Johan van der Merwe, CEO: Sanlam Investments.  “In addition, we have significantly raised the prize money for 2016 to attract the top swimmers from around the country and elevate the swim to one of SA’s premier swimming events.”

“I’m also a strong supporter of safety in swimming,” continues van der Merwe.  “As one of the most popular summer activities worldwide, it’s necessary to create awareness around water safety. We’d like to see everyone in the family learning to swim well.”
