News Release / 09.12.2015

The Happy Mutant Adventure Race Series, composed of seven 72-hour adventure races taking place in six states, will launch in mid-January 2016, making it the largest adventure race series in the U.S.
With races in Utah, Arkansas, Iowa, Virginia, Missouri and Nevada, Happy Mutant founder and race director Toby Evans hopes to reinvigorate interest in the team endurance sport among outdoors enthusiasts and athletes nationwide. He also hopes to attract the top teams in the country as well as some international ones for a chance to win individual race and series prizes valued at more than $10,000.
"The Happy Mutant Adventure Race Series is the first national level race series in 15 years, featuring seven events in six states and across four time zones," Evans said. "We have been planning the logistics, permitting and sponsorship for this series for the past seven years.”
The Happy Mutant Adventure Race Series has announced dates for all of its 2016 races. Four Happy Mutant series races will serve as qualifiers to the United States Adventure Racing Association National Championship:

Adventure racing involves teams of two, three or four competing together in a nonstop race involving cross-country running or trekking, mountain biking, paddling and occasionally other disciplines such as swimming, spelunking, whitewater rafting and rappelling. Teams combine athleticism with strategy and navigation to guide themselves to as many checkpoints as possible within a race’s time limit.
“My races adhere to the “3 A’s”: affordable, accessible, and adventurous,” Evans said. “Participants in the Happy Mutant series won’t have to spend too much money or take weeks of vacation, but they will get to experience the thrills of expedition-style adventure racing while travelling through some of the most scenic parts of the United States.”
Evans has 20 years of adventure racing experience and is a veteran of some of the toughest ultra-endurance events in the world, including the Eco-Challenge, Primal Quest and the Race Across America. Using that experience, Evans crafted the Happy Mutant courses to serve as a gateway into the sport for beginners while simultaneously challenging and entertaining even the most experienced of racers.
“Those races made a powerful impression on me – I’m intimately familiar with what a great race looks like,” he said. “I want every person competing in the Happy Mutant Adventure Race Series to finish with a smile knowing they’ve tested their physical and mental limits.”
