Ingeli SkyMarathon Named Qualifying Race For 2016 Skyruning World Championships

The South African Skyrunning Association (SASA) is proud to announce that the 3rd annual Ingeli SkyMarathon® near Koksand in KwaZulu Natal has been officially named the 2016 qualifying race for the upcoming Skyrunning World Championships, which will take place in Spain on 23 July.

Dubbed the “Green Mamba” of trail running for the several nasty bites it delivers over its 42km course, the Ingeli SkyMarathon® course has more than 2 000m of vertical ascent, making it one of the toughest races on the annual South African Skyrunner® Series.

The winning man and woman of this year's race will be flown, compliments of SASA, to Spain to represent South African skyrunning in the Buff® Epic Run SkyMarathon® in the Vall de Boi in the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees.

The Buff®  Epic Run SkyMarathon® is a highly challenging, extremely technical point-to-point race over a rugged 42km route with 3 200m vertical gain. Indicative of its difficulty, the event has a nine hour time limit.

Rich in cultural history, the spectacular Vall de Boi region is a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by 3 000m peaks and 200 mountain lakes.

The two Ingeli SkyMarathon® winners will have the privilege of competing alongside famous Skyrunners including the likes of Kilian Jornet, Luis Alberto Hernando, Marco de Gesperi, Tom Owens, Iker Karrera, Miguel Heras, Emelie Forsberg, Nuria Picas, Stevie Kremer and many others.

Race organiser Dave Dixon says the Ingeli Group is very excited that the Ingeli SkyMarathon® has been nominated as the qualifier for the 2016 Skyrunning World Champs.

“This puts a new dimension on our event, and we can assure all our runners a world class trail running experience in one of the most pristine areas of South Africa. The route has been designed to provide the athletes with a unique challenge, particularly in the ambits of SkyMarathon running,” says Dixon.
