Outdoor Cinema Hits The Heights In Grasmere
Press Release / 11.07.2016

Festival organisers and villagers alike are celebrating, after Kendal Mountain Festival’s new Outdoor Cinema entertained over 1,000 visitors in Grasmere last weekend.
The events, held over the Friday and Saturday evenings, featured top adventure film screenings plus speakers, live music, food and drink and plenty of family fun. Top British climber Neil Gresham, who spoke on the Friday night, called it a a breathtakingly beautiful event and with good weather and Cumbria’s most dramatic natural scenery as a backdrop, audiences certainly revelled in the experience.
Attractions included sets from local musicians Scrogan’s Run and Evie Plum, lectures from Neil Gresham plus UK Adventurer of The Year Ash Dykes, and of course a programme of the best action adventure films from around the world.
The free events are funded and supported by South Lakeland District Council, Eden District Council and the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership to support communities and businesses affected during the floods last December, and a further Outdoor Cinema is planned for Ullswater on 23 July. Research revealed many visitors had travelled to the area specifically for the Grasmere events, with many people staying over and attending both nights.
South Lakeland District Council’s portfolio holder for Culture, Arts and Events, Councillor Chris Hogg, said: We are delighted to support Kendal Mountain Festival in these unique events, particularly to help support the community and businesses as they recover from December’s flooding. Kendal Mountain Festival has been hugely successful throughout the years and is recognised worldwide and really puts the area on the map. More importantly, the festival is a key part of the Adventure Capital tourism strategy and our festival portfolio which continues to grow and is vital to the local economy. It's also a great inspiration to our local athletes and film-makers.’’
Kendal Mountain Festival continues to reach out beyond its award-winning November event to organise further events around the UK, including a Bike Night in Bristol this Friday.
