Summer is coming and the Rat is Rocking!
Rob Howard / 05.05.2005

First up is Bristol, where a Gary Tompsett and Pete James course promises to inspire even the most seasoned of racers. Although the team aren’t giving too much away, they have given some hints on the challenges that the inaugural Bristol racers will face.
The typically wacky Rat Race event village is being constructed at the Lloyds Amphitheatre, on the dockside at the Floating Harbour. The close proximity of water here at the docks gives a clue as to the venue for some of the kayaking!
The organisers have teamed up with the Bristol Bikefest, occurring on the same weekend, to offer a special package where racers can do both events. The Bikefest, based in Ashton Court Park, could thus be a destination for Rat Racers in Bristol.
Next up is ropes and on this stage organisers promise the most unconventional ropes discipline yet seen in AR will feature in this year’s Bristol Rat Race. Think suits, offices and bizarre departures from buildings!
Venues rumoured to feature in the course include the Downs, the Avon Gorge and extensive use of the Dockside of the City Centre, plus some well known structures from the city’s industrial past.
All in all, it promises to be a spectacle to behold for racer and public alike!
There are classes for rookie, adventure and elite competitors in all three Rat Races and a special youth class has now been added to the one-day Manchester event.
The other major announcement is the launch of the Manchester Aerial Assault, which will take place alongside the Rat Race in Manchester. This event will see elite climbers taking to the skyline of the city and competing on routes developed on buildings. Top UK climber Steve McClure has been tasked with the job of route-setting. It should be a hell of a show!
