Start Planning Now - XPD - Bay of Fires in Tasmania

Press Release / 28.04.2017

With iconic names such as Bay of Fires, Blue Derby Mountain Bike Trails and Wine Glass Bay, the North East Coast of Tasmania needs no introduction to adventure fans. Organisers are exited to announce that the marquee race, XPD is headed there in March 2018. Athletes will race non-stop over a 500km course that includes trekking, mountain biking and kayaking.

The Bay of Fires is consistently rated as one of the world's best beaches and was named the Lonely Planet’s hottest travel destination in 2009. The guide describes it as "the secret edge of Tasmania, laid out like a pirate's treasure map of perfect beach after sheltered cove, all fringed with forest.”

The region is a second home to race director, Louise Foulkes, which makes this race doubly special. “My family owns a “shack” (small house) and has holidayed there each summer for 45 years. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places in the world. As well as the famous coast line, the region is pocketed with hidden gems including some of the most majestic mountains, gorges and waterfalls in Tasmania. More recently, it is home to some of the best mountain bike trails in the world, Blue Derby. The course has been 15 years the making and I look forward to taking teams on an incredible journey through the area.”

The town of St Helens will be the home of the race while the event is on and where teams will gather before and after the race. “St Helens is the perfect place to host the event. It has everything the event needs logistically such as supermarkets and accommodation, yet a small town feel”. Teams will need to fly into Launceston, which has regular connections from Melbourne and Sydney. From there they will be bussed to the east coast and St Helens.

Teams are invited to bring family along to visit Tasmania. As well as incredible natural scenery, the state boasts other recent accolades including the world’s best whisky, best golf links course and arguably the cleanest air on the planet.

Entries to the race open at 9am AEST on the 1st of July.
