Round 1 is open online for one week from 15-21st February exclusively to teams holding an AR World Series Ranking. These teams are listed at https://arworldseries.com/…/AR-World-Series-Rankings-Start-… and have gained a ranking by participating in at least one AR World Series event within the last two years. Round 1 teams are eligible for a special discounted entry fee.

Other teams can secure a spot to explore Sri Lanka through two more rounds of entries which open on the 22nd Feb and 1st March respectively, more details at https://arworldseries.com/arwc-entries/

Also, the winning team at each of the 9 ARWS Qualifying races will gain an automatic entry to the AR World Championship to be held in Sri Lanka from 3-13th December.

The race planning team is currently in Sri Lanka exploring the country and planning the event. One of the team members is Santiago Lopez, Director of the Huairasinchi Qualifying race in Ecuador. He said “Working with an experienced team of adventure people from around the world on a project like the Sri Lanka world championship is big and exciting challenge. I’ve enjoyed the great work everyone in the team is contributing and the good vibes so far. I’ve also found many similarities to some of the Ecuadorian landscapes at similar altitude which was nice, but the culture is very different and new for me.”

The race is expected to cover over 600km, exploring the hill country and the South of the island over a period of 4-8 days. Transfers will be arranged for teams arriving in Colombo to HQ at one of the idyllic beachside towns.

Over 25 nationalities will be represented at the AR World Championship 2019. The team list will include some of the most experienced adventure racers in the world, but the race is also open to teams who are just aiming to finish the ultimate sporting contest in an amazing location.

Jarad Kohlar is the event Safety Officer and has been focusing on the paddling legs of the race. He said “It’s pretty special out here, very different from other locations i’ve been. My tips will be to up-skill in river paddling in moving water. Practice in different types of boats such as pack rafts, canoes and ocean kayaks. Also lots of unique hazards to consider - it’s been interesting developing the “elephant encounter” safety plan!”

The planning team is truely an international collaboration. Brad Baumber is the event Medical and Communications Officer and has travelled from Canada. He said “Sri Lanka is wow! I’ve seen monkeys, buffalo, elephants, snakes, water monitors and heaps of birds. The medical plan is going to be unique for sure.. I’ve been loving the chance to test paddle many of the rivers here in Sri Lanka. My friends at home will hate me, it is -32 degrees and snowing back there and I’m here paddling in shorts and t-shirt.”

Igor Dorotic is the director of Adventure Race Croatia and has the task of plotting the CP locations and creating the race maps. He said “It has been very challenging so far. The main topographic maps from the government are not very good. I am having to compare google maps, satellite views, openstreet maps and Sri Lankan tourist maps. It is very different from the maps I have in Croatia.”

The overall Event Director and AR World Series Director Craig Bycroft said “Sri Lanka is just so vibrant with all the colours, smells, culture and landscapes. It has been a joy to share the excitement and buzz of the organising team as we travel the country planning a grand adventure.”

Santiago Lopez added “We all had to put our personal lives on hold for almost 3 weeks, leaving family and work, but is a sacrifice that will be rewarded with a top level adventure race at the end of the year. I will be proud to have helped create something special.”
