A Busy Weekend

The Sweatshop Adventure Race organised by Trailplus at Longmoor Army camp near Petersfield in Surrey was one of their biggest races so far, with nearly 130 teams taking part. On a bright sunny afternoon they found the sandy course challenging, and Team ‘2 Bunts and a Surfer’ were the quickest around the course. (We’ll have a full report, results and lots of pictures shortly.)
Others have travelled a little further than Surrey …
Several regular racers are in the Italian Alps, at Sulden, competing in the European Selection Trials for the 2006 Fulda Challenge. From the 10 hopefuls (5 male/5 female), only two will make it onto the team and travel to Arctic Canada to represent the UK in the international endurance/driving competition, which has a gold bar as it’s prize. We have reports from the first two days of the trials on the site already, with news on the concluding day to come.
Even further away the final round of the Buff Skyrunner Series took place in Borneo, on Mount Kinabalu, and there was a British winner! The series combines endurance mountain runs around the world including many famous races like Pikes Peak, and it concluded with the Kinabalu Climbathon.
The Saab Salomon mountain running squad were among the favourites and when Rob Jebb secured second place after racing up and down the 4093m peak it was enough to win the series from his team mate Simon Booth, who was 17 points behind. In a series so often dominated by Italian runners it was an emphatic win by the British team, and we’ll have more news on this later this week.
Back in Europe John Laughlin joined two other recent Wilderness ARC competitors Jorg Schneider and Thure Kjaer to race in Denmark at the DTU Adventure Race, a race for teams of 3 starting and ending in Lyngby, north of Copenhagen. There is no news of how they got on, but hopefully John will tell us when the gets back!
