Baja Travesia - Si!
News release / 18.10.2005

synonymous with motorised sports. Each year it hosts the Baja 1000, arguably the hardest off-road race in the world. But Baja is about more than motors: it's also a Mecca for whale watching, sea kayaking and hiking in the Sierra Nevada range. Next month, a new adventure race will unite the two sides of the region.
Baja Travesia is an American expedition race with
Mexican flavour, an adventure race with a rally
spirit. It's also one of the few major (and
affordable) expedition-length adventure races in North America this year.
The five day unsupported race is organised by the
veteran racing duo of Karen Lundgren and Paul Romero (Team SOLE). They're joined as race directors by Mexican Antonio Rosquillas, an experienced event organizer in Baja. Lundgren and Romero's West Coast Adventure racing has long been a favourite, and their first foray into expedition length racing promises to be as popular.
After a year of unseasonably cool races (even Brazil was cold and rainy this year), Baja in December promises a warm weather wrap to the racing year. The 300-kilometre course covers the contradictions that are Baja: paddling in the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, trekking and mountain biking through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and desolate deserts of Baja California. The race goes from sea level to
10,000-foot peaks. And - since this is Baja after all - the race also includes a rally component. What that means exactly remains a closely guarded secret, but a Buff will come in handy to keep the sand out of your mouth.
