CARA and Insurance
Doug Doyle / 04.03.2006

Since the inception of CARA, the association has brought forth an environmental charter, safety guidelines and generated discussion at all levels in advancing the viability of the sport.
The environment charter will assist race directors in securing new venues when approaching public and private land owners by providing a tangible commitment by the organizers for environmentally conscious adventure racing. Race organizers will ensure that they undertake a thorough assessment of the environment prior to activities to ensure that additional requirements are considered, and if required undertaken.
The safety guidelines will aid race organizers in providing participants with a safe and challenging race and racers will benefit by knowing safety on the course has been considered, reviewed and mitigated.
By putting the environmental charter and safety guidelines in place, CARA has raised the bar on an international level for adventure racing management.
Not only has this garnered international attention, CARA has been able to promote its’ association mandate by demonstrating to insurance companies that adventure racing is a vibrant sport in Canada and not an unrestrained risk that should be avoided or covered under an unwieldy and costly insurance premium.
CARA is negotiating a Canada wide group policy for race organizers that will significantly reduce their financial and risk exposure. Race organizers will not have to ‘reinvent the wheel’ when contracting for insurance coverage on a race by race basis by sourcing the ‘best rates.’
The benefits to individual racers will be translated to lower entrance fees and the security of knowing that the race is insured.
As more news comes forward, I’ll let you know.
