2004 Adventure Racing World Championship, hosted by Raid the North Extreme
Home town favourites cross the finish line

Listening to the spectators at the AR World Championship finish line was a bit like listening to a play-by-play.“They’re at the river!
“They’re across the water!’
“They’re on their bikes!
“Here they come!
“They were Team Newfoundland and Labrador, one of many Canadian teams participating the ARWC/Raid the North Extreme, but the only team that could truly be called local.
At least a hundred people were waiting for the team at the finish line, including members of the first and second place teams Nike ACG/Balance Bar (who had cycled in from Corner Brook) and Cross Sportswear as well as Reebok/Maxim, Hard Tale and ATP, which had just finished the race itself.
The mayor of Corner Brook, the host city, was on hand at the river to congratulate the team as it pulled its bikes out of canoes for the final short cycle to the finish. Locals had handed out Newfoundland flags so everyone, even the Swedish racers, were waving them around as the Newfoundlanders cycled in. Dave Coleman raced here at the Extreme in 2001 as part of Team Corner Brook, but was not able to finish that race. The victory was for him exceptionally satisfying. It’s not only a first finish, but a first finish at the World Championship.
