Raid Gauloises
Lost And Found… Geologistics Almost Go Without
Pino / 05.05.2002

The front runners came through over 36 hours before but assistance point 3, sandwiched between the rich alluvial plain of the Song Duong river and the foothills near the village of Cam Son in the district of Bac Giang, is abuzz with mournful murmurings. Giuseppe Minetti is listening in.
“What a contrast in fortunes! At the precise moment I hear that VSD-Eider has won the 11th Raid Gauloises,
Fiona lim, Kuyun Sidau, Jusimen Duaneh, Claus Pederson and their captain Peter Weinig, look utterly shattered, physically and mentally. They must have been looking forward to receiving some creature-comforts, as their crew are carrying all the food, drink, clothes and, most importantly, the equipment needed for the next stages. Without the mandatory kit list they will be disqualified and all that hard work will be to no avail.
They are sitting quietly next to me in the food tent and the press tent has been organised as temporary sleeping quarters for them. There is no way of contacting their assistance and there is a slight worry because they should have been here over 12 hours ago. As one half of the camp celebrates a French victory, in one small and somewhat gloomy corner, team Geologistics is pondering its fate, which lies in the hands of Avtar Singh Sandhu and James Wong.
Shortly after the gloom began to settle over the heads of the team, news came that the assistance vehicle was entering the camp. For safety reasons the Vietnamese chauffeur had refused to drive during the night. Moments later the team were considerably happier tucking into a hot meal, with another course of spicy noodles already in the wok. It’s dark in the camp now but in this tiny corner the sun, the emblem of Malaysia, is shining again.
