ARC 24/12 Hour Adventure Race
Record Entry For ARC Adventure Race
Michael Jacques / 08.04.2005

A record entry of 54 teams will line up in Coromandel for the ARC 24 Hour adventure race, an event which doubles as round two of the Sportzhub.com national adventure racing series. The race this year will include target shooting, rope work and exploration of old gold mines and competitors can chose either a 24-hour or 12-hour race, with the 24-hour hosting the national title status.
Leaders of the national series after November’s prestigious Southern Traverse are Team Kathmandu of Duncan and Hamish Hamilton, Kate Callaghan and George Christison. But they are not entered for this weekend’s Coromandel event.
Favourites this weekend must be defending national series champions Subaru Adventure of Wayne Oxenham, Stuart Lynch, Carl Bevins and new addition Alexandra Stewart. The Auckland-based Team Subaru came out of nowhere to clinch the national title in the final race last year. With the addition of Alex Stewart, a former national triathlon rep and the women’s winner at the Speights Coast to Coast in 1996, they will be even harder to beat in 2005.
Former ARC winners Green Decoys of Phil White, Phil Wood, Rhys Burns and Anna Mortimer are among the favourites once again, although the Auckland team have changed their team name in 2005 to Pro-4 Nutrition. Others to watch for include last year’s national series runners up, Team Ruahine Kayaks, headed by Hawke’s Bay’s Lyn Helliwell.
