Hong Kong Team Wins the Miles in Taiwan
04.05.2005

Team Protrek a combination of British racer Daniel Brown (resident in Hong Kong) and Portugese racer Pedro Ribeiro, who lives in Macau won in a time of 4:07:48, claiming most of the 180,000 Asia Miles on offer as the prize pool.
Just over 4 minutes later Team New Balance PowerBar from Hong Kong made up of South African Gary Mandy and Briton Mark Williams ran across the sandy beach to take second place in 4 hours 13 minutes 6 seconds. Finishing off the top 3 was Team PowerBar, another British/Portuguese combo of Adrian King from Hong Kong and Henrique Galvoa of Macau.
To wake everyone up for the 7am race race start, the course took competitors on a 400m beach run followed by a 6m pier jump with 2 swims in the marina only 4 minutes into the race. Competitors then did a 5km loop back to the start line, involving running up a river stream bed, going through some local farmers rice terraces and dirt running trails.
Coming back to the transition they then had to climb a 9m cargo net up on to a bridge to get to the bikes for a 15 km mountain bike ride over 2 mountains to get to the Jin Sha Wan coast line for another 2.5 km of rock scrambling and coasteering along the shore to Lungdung.
When competitors arrived at Lungdung, one of the most famous climbing areas in Taiwan, after having their equipment checked they then had to go down 200m of fixed lines to reach a 25m abseil to the rocky coastline. This was followed by an immediate Tyrolean Traverse using both hands to pull themselves across 2 ropes with a pulley and a carabiner to reach the 30m gap between the rocks.
