Patagonia Expedition Race
A Shortened Paddle
José Manuel Jiménez / 18.02.2006

Although the full stage could not take place teams would instead paddle to an Island in the middle of Otway Channel go around the Chilean Navy Vessel “ONA and back to Sutivan Ranch. From that point on it was impossible to continue because of the bad weather and strong currents.
Teams have been anxious about this paddle, and up until now it has been the only paddle section that more than two teams have been able to complete in this race!
At 9:30am teams, Buff, Alberta, Mad Scientists and DAP (Feed The Machine has still not been seen in the trekking section) got into their kayaks and started this stage. From the beginning the Spaniards and Canadians took the lead and kept it up the whole way.
Team DAP had to be extracted at the navy vessel. They had arrived from the trek only 6 hours previously with two team members experiencing severe ankle and muscular pain, and had barely been able to climb into their kayaks. They showed amazing strength but their withdrawal from the paddle wasn’t unexpected.
