Wan Dae Series
A Windy Dae on the Pentlands

The first test for the hardy bunch that had entered for the 8 hour ‘Cask Strength’ race was the ‘Sevylor inflation marathon’. The ex ACE Race Sevy fleet is showing it’s age now and after a few minutes hard pumping many teams heard a tell-tale hiss. As the pile of discarded boats grew it became a test of patience for the unlucky ones. total-adventure.co.uk inflated 7 before giving up and ‘acquiring’ a fully inflated kayak from nearby! (It’s likely to be the last outing for the Sevy fleet fountunately.)
Even then the first couple of hours of the race were still going to be about managing the Sevy’s. From the start at the Harlaw Ranger centre teams had to run for a mile carrying their kayaks, passing the Harlaw Reservoir to reach the launch point on the adjoining Threipmuir reservoir.
It was a very different start with teams jogging along the track with the green Sevys bouncing between them, and a more difficult task for the teams of 3 entered than for pairs of fours. So was the paddle twice round the reservoir, as they had to decide whether to tow one kayak, or leave a single racer to tackle the difficult conditions alone.
