Mild Seven Outdoor Quest
British assault on Borneo Mild Seven
Tim Lloyd / 12.11.2002
The race will be contested by some of the World’s best proven adventure racing teams, including current World Champions Nokia (Finland), and World cup holders Allianz (Switzerland). There will also be some serious competition from the USA and the Southern Hemisphere. The members of Team Saab Salomon will be Ben Bardsley, Adam Haynes, Helen Jackson and Marc Laithwaite, they will be accompanied by team manager Tim Lloyd. The race promises to be unique, with a variety of challenges for the team to overcome, not least of which will be the climate. The race will take teams from the shores of the South China Sea, through tropical rain forests with temperatures reaching 40 degrees, and up to the Alpine summit of Mount Kinabalu, at over 14,000 feet the highest point in south east Asia.
The race format will be new to the team too, with 4 stages being run over 4 days. Each stage will be about 7 hours in length, there will be little or no navigation involved unless visibility becomes very poor. The race disciplines include trail running, mountain biking, white-water canoeing, sea kayaking, inline skating and rope activities. The course has been designed by adventure race legends Ian Adamson and John Howard and promises to be extremely tough and competitive.
Tim Lloyd is very optimistic about the British challenge. “We’ve got a very strong team again, and are confident for another top 3 finish. We’re riding the crest of a wave at the moment and are determined to show the southern hemisphere teams what the level of British adventure racing is
Adam is of a similar opinion. “Our training has gone really well and we can’t wait to get out there. We might struggle with the heat and humidity a bit, but we’re really fit and work well together as a team. We need to be careful not to pick up any bugs or illness during our stay there.
The race will be bought to you as it happens on the sleepmonsters site, so keep on looking, and hopefully witness another World class performance from our international Saab Salomon team.
