The Three Peaks Yacht Race
Trophy Hunting
Rob Howard / 16.06.2006
This race has an amazing number of trophies on offer, probably twice as many as there boats in the race! Whether they are at the front of the back the teams will all be competing for this glittering and sometimes bizarre array of prizes (the slowest runners win a pair of mounted wooden clogs donated by a Dutch team). This afternoon Stuart Hale, who is on the back-up team for defending champions Vlad the Impaler, wandering into the race office with two large shields, covered front and back with the names of past winners, and a large cup. He was returning some of the teams trophies from last year when the team were dominant both at sea and on the mountains. “They are some more on the boat, he said as he handed them back in.
The same team are racing again, with Greg Marsh skippering his Simpson design 38 footer, Richard Norris and Ian Winterburn on the crew, and Keith Read and Rob Smith of the Acclerate Adventure Racing squad as their runners. Between them they won the prestigious Daily Telegraph Cup as outright winners, the Tilman Trophy for all round performance (4 team members on a summit) and other trophies for the fastest first, second and third legs, and the quickest times on both Snowdon and Scafell Pike!
