2002 Year Review
June – Go North for Adventure
Rob / 20.12.2002

The race was a true winter challenge and a tough test for the newly formed Saab Salmon team as Tim Lloyd’s report makes clear. Coming from the UK they stood no chance at taking on Scandinavian teams on cross-country skis! You can read how they got on here.
Also, in the same month was the Ã…re Extreme Challenge and this time we had a report from intrepid Dutch/British team, Leiden Adventure Racing. They performed heroic kayak rescues of damsels in distress, sank into bogs, stripped off in Swedish supermarket car parks and had a great time. Read about it here.
Stripping off was not a wise option at the second ACE Race of the year at Kielder in NE England. Apart from being cold and damp the ferocious midges were having a feeding frenzy. How can something so tiny cause so much misery? No doubt it was the least favourite venue of the year, but it set Marc Laithwaite on his way to the series title with a first ever win after several previous near misses. Read about it here.
In The News
In the news this month was Noel Hanna with a podium place at the Beast of the East in Canada following straight on from being on the winning team at Adrenalin Rush.
The BBC were recruiting for the second series of \'Tough Enough for the SAS\' and found adventure racers and elite armed forces have a lot in common.
There was sad news too with the death of Richard Collison, a popular regular at ACE races, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes held a sell out fund raising lecture in London for Carolyn Jones, who was left severely disabled after a canyoning accident at the World Championships in Switzerland.
