The Last Desert (Antarctica) 2007
Stage 2 Report
24.11.2007

"I have an important announcement," said Julio, the ship's expedition leader. "Last night we received a distress call from the Explorer, a ship that I know very well, as I spent six years on the Explorer. The ship hit an iceberg and was not able to pump out the water fast enough. The decision was made to change course to go towards the ship to attempt a rescue, if needed. The passengers on the ship had to abandon and were picked up three and one half hours later; fortunately there were no casualties. This set our ship off course by about 12 hours."
The Last Desert 's course was altered, but we did not care, a fellow passenger ship sank. We were just glad to be safe. Later in the day we found another solution to our 12-hour delay and have just spent the last four hours on the Antarctic mainland on an abandoned Argentine base for Stage 2 of The Last Desert. The area was called Paradise Bay and it lived up to and exceeded our expectations which were already high given the amazing scenery and wildlife we had already encountered.
The competitors have all fully recovered from sea sickness and were more than ready to begin Stage 2. Competitors departed the ship via zodiacs around 9 pm and concluded the stage around 1 am. They are now sitting around the ship bar loading up on carbohydrates via draft beer.
