You made the big move away from world champion team NIKE last year. How was this race for you personally, going against your former team-mates, and then beating them?
Personally for me this race was vindication for the move to set up my own team. I had a great year last year with Nike, but one of the things I had wanted to do was to win a big race with a team that I’d had some responsibility for creating, rather than with an established team I’d joined. It is always a fantastic sensation when you can beat Nike, because they are so often at the top - you know you’ve really had a good performance. There was also really close racing with Wilsa Helly Hansen, Orionhealth and La Fuma, who have all been consistently close to the top of the races all year
How did your team work together on this race?
The team went pretty well with the team work. I think it was definitely the key to our victory. There will always be things to work on, but this represented a huge step forward in the evolution of the team from the disappointing beginnings in Scotland.
Did you encounter any problems or major challenges along the way? If yes, how did you work through them?
Our team had its share of problems like everyone else, so there is still plenty of scope within the team for improvements – but that is a good indicator that we really have a good unit now. We had a few health issues among the team during the long trekking stage but were able to hang in there and not lose any time. We made a bit of a tactical error on the second day of the kayak where we misinterpreted the rules, and subsequently left a couple of hours early on the second day, which allowed the chasing teams to take some time out of us with the tide favouring them more.
