Oman Adventure Race
Prize and Reward
18.12.2007
At the end of the Oman Adventure Gerard Fusil, the Race Director, explains his philosophy on prizes in adventure racing.Alas, the entrance of money into the hitherto unsullied world of wilderness adventure sports has not gone unnoticed.
Gérard Fusil, pioneer of this type of competition, is keen to make his position clear: “It has never been our intention, and never will be, to shower the winners of the Oman Adventure, the Réunion d’Aventures or the future Raid Caneo Nature with money. These people are genuine champions, athletes who are dedicated to this non-stadium sport. There is no way we are going to turn them into pseudo amateurs by making financial reward the aim of the game.
How can the young, and hence vulnerable, domain of wilderness adventure sport resist the all powerful lure of money, when great, traditional and formerly respected disciplines have succumbed? Everyone knows that money engenders doping, veritable cancer of the sporting world.
When the prizes are awarded for the Oman Adventure 2007, the winning pair will receive the nominal sum of €1,500 and free entry to the Raid Caneo Nature, which takes place in France this summer. The runners up will also be awarded free entry to the Raid. The team that came third will receive free entry to Oman Adventure 2008.
All this is exactly in line with Gérard Fusil’s philosophy concerning such events: the winner’s chief reward is to have won; the reward for the majority is to see their team’s name included in the final rankings.
