Keen Adventure Race - Alps to the Ocean
Ahh, the smell of gum leaves!
Jacqueline Windh / 04.04.2008

I arrived in on Tuesday (straight from the Baja Travesia – Paul and Karen had me staying up so late over there that I arrived into Australia pre-acclimatized to the time zone over here!). They tell me that the temperatures the weekend before were up around the mid-30s, but I didn’t see any of that.
Then on Wednesday, a ferocious wind storm hit the southeast part of the continent, all the way from Melbourne up to Canberra. Where I was, in the town of Ballarat, the sky glowed an eerie shade of mustard yellow, from all the dust churned up from the surrounding drought-stricken lands, and tree branches hurled around wildly, batting at the sides of buildings and street lights. By the time it was all done, a layer of dust had settled on everything: windows, cars, foliage. Damage was so severe in some areas that 20,000 homes were without electricity throughout the next day.
