Race Records Crumble at 2008 Bribie Island Multisport

Glen Kirby managed to hold out former Ironman Guy Andrews to take out the crown as the solo male champion. The two raced neck and neck until the grueling 9km trail run in the middle of the race which included an ascent of Wildhorse Mountain. Here Glen showed his supremacy managing to pull ahead of Guy by 7 minutes. Glen held his lead until the end finishing in a time of 6 hours and 9 minutes. Guys Andrews crossed the line in second in a time of 6 hrs 24 min. Bruce Thiele rounded out the field finishing in a time of 6 hrs 42 minutes to take out third. Last years race record was smashed by 19 minutes.

The women’s solo event was an exciting affair right from the start with the lead changing in almost every leg up until the final kayak. Kim Beckinsale managed to obtain an early lead in the first few legs but was passed in the leg 4, the longest kayak by Jaqui Kelly and new comer Nikki Rutland. Kim powered back to regain and hold the lead in the next two technical mountain bike and run stages but determination saw Jaqui and Nikki again pass the multisport veteran in the final kayak. Jaqui managed to hold onto a narrow victory over Nikki finishing in new record time of 7 hrs and 6 minutes.
