Christophe Le Saux wins Guadarun 2009

2009 marked the 10th running of Guadarun - a six-day staged running race. I’ve been paying special attention to the event, as I intend to run it next year! I first got acquainted with the isles of Guadeloupe two years ago, when I reported on an adventure race there for SleepMonsters. The islands of the Guadeloupian archipelago are very unique, each one different from the others, in terms if geography, climate, settlements - and that is much of the attraction of Guadarun. The stages of Guadarun take place on different islands of this French Caribbean chain.

So, I’m planning to be there for next year’s edition - which will take place April 3rd to 11th, 2010. Perhaps I’ll see you there - to tempt you, I’ve put together a summary of what went down this year, based upon information the organizers have up on their website: www.guadarun.com. See you there??

Pre-race
Course info is released to the 50 or so racers. The route will cover a range of terrain, to a total of about 150 km over the six days, as follows:

Day 1. Isle Désirade, 26 km starting 7 am staring and finishing on the beach

Day 2. Isle Marie-Galante, 30 km starting 7am at Ste-Thérèse and finishing at Feuillère à Capesterre Beach.

Day 3. Terre-de-Bas, 18km, starting 8am at Restaurant Maracudja and finishing at Grande-Anse beach.

Day 4. Terre-de-Haut, 17 km, starting at 8am, finishing at Pompierre.

Day 5. Basse-Terre, 25 km, starting 7am at Col des Mamelles and finishing at Deshaies Botanical Garden.

Day 6. Grande-Terre, 25 km, starting 7am at Pointe des Chateaux, finishing at l’Autre bord du Moule beach.

Organizer Lucien Datil notes that runs on the arlier days are more “classic trail runs but, by Day 4, competitors will be in and out of mud on the forest, and the course will be much more technical.

Among the favourites this year stands out Christophe Le Saux, from Guyana, who won this race in 2005 and placed second in 2006.
