Local climber joins one of the race favourites
Rob / 13.04.2002

Team Parrot/Lythgoe have a fantastic track record of success, but for this race they are joined by an AR virgin. John Lowther is starting out in one of the UK’s toughest races with one the UK’s fastest teams.
He’s well equipped for the job and brings a lot of local knowledge to the team. Though originally from Cumbria he now lives just down the road in Aviemore and works as a mountain guide, and for the Avalanche Information Service. He spends most of his time on these hills and is used to trekking across them with heavy loads – he’s in the local mountain rescue team too.
“I’ve done a lot of fell running and mountain biking he said, “but we’ll have quite heavy packs so I wonder how much running there will be in the race. I’m really looking forward to my first race and to being told where to go! It’s the journey aspect that appeals to me. I’m nervous though and have a bit of a knot in my stomach this morning. I wonder if I can keep going that long. Then he nodded towards his team mates: “And I wonder if I can keep with that lot! It’s going to be a tough assignment.
