Austria's National Champion Alban Lakata has won the second stage of the 2010 CRAFT BIKE TRANS GERMANY powered by NISSAN. After 74.40 kilometres, 1,863 metres in altitude and 2:46:27.9 hours, the Topeak Ergon Racing athlete came in one tenth ahead of Christoph Sauser (SUI, Specialized Factory Racing), who is still leading the overall ranking. German Champion Jochen Käß from Multivan Merida Biking came in as third, crossing the finish line after 2:49:58.4 hours while leading a group of seven pursers.

According to the close result and his first stage win in 2010, his second overall after having triumphed in the 2009 opening stage, Lakata was very pleased: “Mainly, I was aiming to secure my second rank. That worked out fine. And to win a stage is always a nice-to-have.

The 2009 Marathon World Champion runner up cemented his runner-up position in the Trans Germany ranking due to some nice co-work with the bearer of the Yellow Jersey in the descent from Adlerhorst to Tannheimer Tal and the following climb from Zöblen to Lohmoos. Also, the 30-years-old didn’t get shocked by the again bad weather conditions, which caused a lot of flooded passages on the routing. The next two stages to Sonthofen (GER) and Bregenz (AUT) will bring the answer to the question if Lakata is also able to take over the lead in the ranking.

Close battle for victory to be expected

“I would like to win the whole race, of course. But Susi (Christoph Sauser) is a top mountain biker. It’s not easy to catch up one minute. But I’m feeling good and a lot of things can still happen. I’m not giving up, said Lakata who – by checking the gap of 1:03 minutes on Sauser – hopes for another good result tomorrow. “The stage is short but tough for the stamina. Maybe I get along with it better than he does.

But Sauser, today in superb shape again, is also expecting something on the 55 kilometres long sprint leg through the Allgau region finishing in Sonthofen. “It has a cross country character and a final climb. The climb could be something for me, explained the Swiss rider, who is also leading the best climber classification.
