. Over 600 kids and 1200 adults completed the events over the weekend with Grant Suckling and Deanna Blegg both victorious today in the tough 60km swim, run, paddle and ride event. A misty morning greeted swimmers at iconic Lorne pier for the start of the 1.9km ocean swim. Crowds cheered from above as swimmers ran into the water at a furious pace and jostled for position before heading for Lorne beach. In the individuals, Guy Andrews, former ironman legend, and local lifesaver Tristan Read lead into the next 13km ocean paddle leg with the masses pouring in behind. It was a real spectacle to watch as hundreds of paddlers headed in formation back out towards the pier with some struggling to get out past the break, adding to the entertainment. Andrews maintained his lead which wasn’t surprising considering the calibre of his paddling squad on the Gold Coast which he claims is the best in the world. The real test for him was to come in his weaker legs of the run and mountain bike. Declaring that he is in his best form ever, the 40 year old was certainly staying true to his bold allegation. Suckling, Geelong resident, was within striking distance though and Australian Adventure Racing Champion, Jarad Kohlar, from Port Melbourne was closing in after losing 5 minutes in his weakest leg, the swim. Tension was building as the racers headed along the coast and into the Otway Ranges in a lung busting 15km run leg. This event isn’t for the faint hearted and many opt to do it as a team doing one or two legs as part of a relay instead but everyone unites in the support of those on the course as respect for what an achievement it is just to finish one discipline.
