Marysville to Melbourne Muiltisport Challenge
Coastal Clash crowns King and Queen after cursed criterium crash.
Rapid Ascent - Media Release / 31.12.1969

The two-day festival of coastal sporting events attracted more than 400 competitors and a thousand more spectators to the township, located an hour and a half north of Perth.
Competing in the obligatory five of eight categories on offer, the overall event was eventually taken out by Steve Harris (Padbury, WA) and Leah Glass (Shenton Park, WA), with Malaga Cycles claiming the coastal crown team title. The Kings and Queens were presented with a craypot trophy, recognising the area’s seafaring heritage, onto which their names will be engraved for perpetual recognition of their achievements.
While the 18km paddling and 2km ocean swim events went off without a hitch under blazing blue skies and sunshine, as did the 37km time trial ride and kids triathlon, the eliminator criterium road riding category was all tension and drama as the pack dropped off to leave two final riders to battle it out. As they disappeared around a corner, the crowd chattered and waited expectedly – who would come back around in first place? Until a call registered through event communications that the two riders has in fact collided on the final back straight, both hitting the tarmac with enough bike shattering force to halt the race, which was on consideration announced a draw.
