Adventure Race in the Costa Rican Caribbean
News Report. Translation J. Howard / 31.12.1969

The Costa Rican Caribbean will host the second of these great events in which competitors must complete an adrenaline-filled 540 km route and face natural obstacles and major challenges in natural and lush and beautiful landscapes.
"Adventure Race World Series, is the largest internationally-recognised adventure sport organisation, comprising ten qualifying events around the world. These adventure races are considered the toughest in the world in terms of the mental and physical demands on competitors.
“Moreover, they are completing a route of over 500 km with only physical strength: lack of sleep, poor eating and difficulties of climate and team management push the human body to the limit," commented Johana Arguello, of the organising committee of the race in Costa Rica.
What does it involve?
This competition, like the first race held last year, and other world adventure race competitions, will be run "non-stop," which means a continuous journey where each team-member, in teams of 4, must complete a variety of disciplines such as mountain biking, kayaking, rafting, ropes, mountain hikes and canopy, all without the use of motor transport.
Throughout the route, they will pass through 31 different checkpoints, navigating using only map and compass, which makes the competition even more difficult for even the most accomplished athletes, due to the peculiarities of the terrain and cartography in Costa Rica.
19 teams from 13 different countries are confirmed to participate in the race.
"Our country is now internationally recognised as an ideal destination for ecotourism, with a large influx and development of adventure tourism activities. Hosting this event puts Costa Rica on the world adventure racing map, demonstrating our ability not only for adventure tourism, but also the infrastructure, landscapes and human resources of the standard required to offer adventure for professionals from around the world," said Arguello.
One of the distinct aspects of this event is to try to reduce the environmental impact by ensuring it is completely CO2 neutral, with a commitment to offset Carbon Dioxide emissions from both air and land travel.
This event is made possible thanks to the support and sponsorship of The Costa Rican Institute of Tourism (ICT)
Toyota, Toyota Rent a Car, Zoom Radio, Cinépolis, AeroDiva Helicopters, The North Face, Aventuras del Sarapiqui, Horizons Travel Agency and SPOT.
