Close Racing at the Start of Wildside MTB

Pure Tasmania WildsideMTB 2012 kicked off today in hot conditions on the open alpine trails around Cradle Mt, Tasmania. 38 km of racing in two stages tested the field of almost 500 riders.
Day One saw very close racing amongst the elite men, with just 32 seconds separating the top six riders at the end of the day.
Under 23 rider, Paul van der Ploeg (Vic) set a narrow lead with an overall time of 1:34:47, ahead of Andrew Blair (NSW) 1:34.52 and previous Widside winner Adrian Jackson (Vic) 1:35.08. Tasmania’s Sid Taberlay is currently fourth overall in 1:35.08.
Current Canadian Champion, Max Plaxton, finishes a very close fifth in 1:35.13.
Stage One was won by Paul van der Ploeg by just half a wheel, however on the more open trails of Stage 2, Adrian Jackson set the pace, coming in ahead of Neil van der Ploeg.
The close results set the scene for some very interesting riding heading into Day 2, where the course becomes more technical, testing the of the riders as they head into the rainforest of Mt Black.
The Women’s racing today was dominated by Jenni King, who won both race stages in an overall time of 1:56.30. Jessica Douglas (Vic) was second overall ahead of Amity Mc Swan (Vic) 2:03.34.
