Huairasinchi Ecuador
Night One in Huairasinchi
Isabela Green / 19.02.2012

The first night of Huairasinchi Chevrolet 2012 was challenging for many of the teams. Team Ecuador – Nissan has maintained their lead during the night followed by team Lafuma Vibram and Merrell Adventure Addicts by an average of 4-5 hours.
Although teams were maintaining a steady altitude during the race; approximately between 3,250 – 3,800 metres above sea level, altitude proved to be the biggest challenge, especially for our international teams. Teams Roc Roi Trangoworld and Skandia Adventure Team had to pull out of the race due to health issues. Both teams have been treated and doing well but have confirmed their decision to stop racing. Team AR Costa Rica – The North Face also stopped racing during the night. Despite pulling out of the race during the night they have decided to re-engage instead. Team Untamed Adventure stopped running yesterday afternoon and re-engaged this morning with the adventure teams.
Teams had to both trek and cycle through approximately 5 CPs, moving from CP 6 to CPs 10 and 11 around Quilotoa Lake. Team Ecuador has held on to their lead despite a problem with the tires on one of their bikes. The organization decreed that the team had to solve their problem only with the help of their support crew and as such, they found a solution in the transition zone and were able to continue without problems.
Adventure teams spent the night in the Guayama campsite which is where the elite teams who had changed course also spent the night. They started day 2 at exactly 6:15 in the morning.
