News Release / 24.04.2012

Puntarenas, Costa Rica, April 23rd -The Adventure started at the Puntarenas pier. The 17 teams who show their strength and skills in the Costa Rica Adventure Race 2012, started this morning with an urban orientation activity that allowed them to share some time with locals, who later gathered around the pier to support their favorite teams at the official starting point of this non-stop competition.
The Puntarenas pier was the starting point where the 17 registered teams started their way with a short but dramatic race along the pier. Then, they jumped into the water and swam back to the seashore to take their corresponding kayaks, and start their 5-mile (8 kilometers) way to San Lucas Island.

The Island of Lonely Men -as was called by the Costa Rican writer José León-Sánchez, was the point of arrival (9:00 a.m.) where the Team Adventure Addicts BUFF (Spain) and Tecnu (Brazil, Canada, and the United States) teams started moving away from the other teams and made a difference.
Once at the Island, with the suffocating heat, the teams started the 7-mile (11 kilometers) trekking corresponding to this stage. Here, competitors would make their best effort surrounded by the exuberant nature of one of the only two islands of the Gulf of Nicoya, which has natural fresh water. Moreover, competitors could see packs of howler monkeys, deer, raccoons, anteaters, and other types of mammals.
When leaving San Lucas, the Tecnu team took the lead and headed their kayaks towards Paquera town.
This event is carried out thanks to the support from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute and Toyota
