The Adventure Racing European Championships 2013
Salewa Trail Team Racing to the European Title
News Release / 28.01.2013

All teams which continue AREC are skiing now and this second skiing stage should be a bit nicer than the first one as most of the route is tracked. It's snowing now and -10 degrees C with a strong wind making it feel colder.
AS the race reached its later stages racers looked tired and the ’sleepmonsters’ appeared. Ulrike Fuhrman (Team 360 Stopni) said she got hallucinations, but she didn't want to say what she was seeing. Team ACE Adventure/Ebike.lv were trying to leave one TA five times but were still missing something or somebody. They needed five tries to manage it! All the teams now have around 350 km in their legs ...
Between the CP 42 and CP 43 the first teams to ski through were the Czech Teams (CZAR Team Berghaus/Merida/Nutrend and Salomon/Suunto/OpavaNet) at 20:30. Thirty hours later the Russian team arrived followed by the Salewa Trail Team, who had gained 1.5 hours. They were in good shape and looked strong. All the teams now needed to hurry because of the time limits and cut offs.
Originally the distance for the race was estimated at 500 km but because of tough winter conditions and the tempo of the teams the race organizers had to leave out a few check points. Teams also chose to miss some sections and there were various penalties and bonuses which meant the results had to be calculated and were not determined by finish order.
When all the checks and calculations were complete the winners of the 2013 Adventure Racing European Championships were The Salewa Trail Team from Poland comprising Justyna Frączek, Łukasz Warmuz (navigator), Artur Kurek and Maciej Dubaj. They finished ahead of the Russian team Garmin/Arena/RedFox (Philipp Fedosov, Natalya Abramova, Igor Klepcha and Ilya Stroganov) and won the title and a paid for entry to the World Championships in Costa Rica ... where conditions will be very different!
