Superb weather on race morning meant competitors were in for a treat, with some glorious views, especially up at 791m on the top of Grisedale Pike.
Superb weather on race morning meant competitors were in for a treat, with some glorious views, especially up at 791m on the top of Grisedale Pike.

Sunday 7th April, saw the 6th race in the season head back up north to the Lake District - Braithwaite, near Keswick to be exact. The location, of course, opened the way for the course planner, Anthony Cooper, to throw in some single track mountain biking in Whinlatter Forest and some lung busting fell running to the summits of the surrounding snow covered fells.

The tough terrain, meant that nobody cleared the whole course, the nearest team to doing that was the male pair team of Tom Gibbs & Chris Hope (Team adidas TERREX /KMB) who missed only 2 controls and ended up with a total of 590 points.

In the solo male category, the first four men all achieved 580 points, but the speedy Kim Collison took first place due to finishing 8 minutes quicker than his fellow Mountain Hardware team mate Alex Pilkington. Not bad going when Kim had raced the previous day over the 42 mile ‘Dusk to Dawn’ event, which took in many of the Lake District peaks.

In the female solo category, Sue Booth, who normally competes in the female pairs category, decided to go solo for this event and had a stormer, taking first place with 500 points. Team Tri-Active’s Fiona Poulter, broke her winning streak of this series, by coming home in 4th place due to a stomach bug. Hopefully she will be back to form for the final race next month.

For Goodness Shakes! mixed pairs team – Barbara Lonsdale & Alistair Morris had a superb race, coming home with 555 points and 8th place overall. In this category Shona Robertson & Adam Perry, were the only pair to clear all the run stage, which is very impressive, considering only one other person – Campbell Walsh in the male solo category managed to do this also.

One of the most impressive results of the day was the female pairing of Rosemary Byde & Lucy Harris of Team Haglofs/ERC, who scored an amazing 545 points, with 7 minutes to spare. The pair have had consistent wins for the previous 5 events and Sunday’s results saw them positioned in 9th place overall.

The Haglofs Open 5 Adventure Race series concludes with the final event in Church Stretton, Shropshire on Sunday 5th May – see http://www.openadventure.com/open5/2012-13/96_shropshire_hills.php.

More single-track mountain biking and lots of hills are definitely on the cards for this one. It will also be the decider for the series competition so we are hoping to see some impressive performances all round.
