The Three Peaks Yacht Race
The First Withdrawal of the Race
Rob Howard / 17.06.2013
With the exception of Driac who are still making their way towards Whitehaven, all of the remaining teams have now reached the Lake District and 4 pairs of runners are on the mountain run to Scafell Pike overnight on Monday/Tuesday.
The race has also had its first withdrawal – Team Laura. One of their runners was in difficulty on Scafell Pike and was unable to continue so their support team drove back to Whitehaven where the team decided not to continue with the race and withdrew.
For the later teams making their way to Whitehaven the wind has remained frustratingly light and progress has been slow. This was especially true for the unlucky Pears n’Peaks who had engine failure and had to row in from St. Bees Head!
There was excitement too for Westholme Warriors who sailed into a military firing range – while the guns were going off! “We’d checked and there were no restrictions, though there was due to be firing tomorrow, so we had every right to be there,” said one of the runners. “We were told to leave quickly under engine and the Coast Guard advised we should comply so we did. We could hear the guns, but didn’t see any impacts.” They motored out of the range, but won’t be penalised for a situation outside their control.
Meanwhile at the front of the race Dido and Nunatak are still locked in an intense contest as they make their way around the Mull of Kintyre and up through the Inner Hebridean islands towards Fort William and Ben Nevis.
