Adventure Race National Series - Lorne
Olympians And TV Stars To Race Lorne Adventure Fest
News Release (Rapid Ascent) / 13.11.2013
Three Australian Olympic representatives and two Bondi Rescue TV stars will head to Lorne, Victoria to race in the Lorne Adventure Fest on 7-8 December, 2013.
Multiple Olympic swimming representative and medallist Michael Klim will lead a team of four to go head to head against four other teams, captained by 2012 Olympians Brendan Sexton (triathlon) and Karsten Fosterling (rowing), and Bondi Rescue TV Lifeguards Andrew Reid and Corey Oliver.
Previously known as the Anaconda Adventure Race, the premier Lorne Adventure Race attracts 1,200 participants each year and features a 1.9km ocean swim, 13km paddle, 14km trail run, 18km mountain bike and a 1.2km beach run to finish.
Klim and Sexton will contest the ocean swim leg as part of their teams; whilst Fosterling and Oliver take on the adrenalin-pumping mountain bike leg, and Reid the spectacular trail run leg.
Each team captain will be joined by three lucky team-mates who were selected via a social media promotion earlier this month.
"Team support is very important. There can be times during the event when you reach a tough section and knowing your team-mate’s are out there supporting you either vocally or with gear etc, makes a massive difference." Said Klim on team mate selection.
“I love racing as a team, it pushes you so much more because you don’t want to let your team mates down – and the back trails of beautiful Lorne look amazing.” Said Reid, who recently competed in the World 70.3 Ironman Championships in Vegas.
Husband and wife, Robert and Kym Child of Tasmania were both selected in different teams for the mountain bike legs (Robert with Klim’s team; Kym with Sexton’s team), and cannot wait to rub shoulders with their celebrity captains and enjoy their adventure weekend away.
“Such fantastic news to be selected in the teams; we are both very excited.” Said Kym. “Now to get organised and ask our parents to look after our 2 year old twins so we can enjoy the Lorne Adventure Fest.”
Daniel James, selected for the swim leg with Bondi’s Corey Oliver, is heading down from Sydney for the race.
“I’m three days into a strict training and diet regime,” jokes James on his selection. “Well kind of; I’ll definitely be raring to go come race day!”
The Lorne Adventure Fest has become a genuine institution for multi-sport and adventure racers, taking in Lorne’s stunning ocean and hinterland wilderness with the four off-road disciplines.
Three race formats will be held over the December weekend, with entries still available as relay teams of two to four, or as individuals:
· Lorne Adventure Race: the premier race for the more experienced adventure racer over a 50km course; including ocean swimming, kayaking, mountain biking and trail running.
· Lorne Mini Adventure Race: a half distance race for younger competitors and first timers, designed to provide a taste of adventure.
· Lorne Junior Survivor: A 4km running and obstacle course for kids aged 4 to 13 through Lorne’s coastal environments (individual only)
Lorne Adventure Fest’s sister race, the Act-Belong Commit Augusta Adventure Fest was recently held in Western Australia (2-3 November) and is known as the biggest adventure race in the world with over 3,300 competitors across the weekend.
The quiet coastal town of Lorne along the picturesque Great Ocean Road is just 2 hours from Melbourne airport, and is said to be the home of one of Australia’s toughest, yet most exciting adventure courses.
Amongst the field are a range of athletic abilities from elite individuals, through to first timers, celebrities and relay teams who are just out for a fun and challenging weekend away.
