Just 19kms south east of Kempsey and 440 kms north of Sydney, Crescent Head offers magnificent water views, as the village fronts Killick Creek and the ocean, and is surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Hat Head National Park. At the 2006 census, Crescent Head had a population of 1,076 people.
Crescent Head is situated at the southern end of an area known as the Macleay Valley Coast. This magnificent section of coast stretches to the north and takes in iconic townships such as Hat Head and South West Rocks. Hinterland areas include rain forested Yarriabini National Park, remote mountain areas as well as huge flowing rivers. Kempsey is the main town that services the area.
Crescent Head is famous for its fantastic surfing beaches, and many visitors come to Crescent Head especially for the surfing. In May 2008 it became the 4th area in Australia to be installed as a National Surfing Reserve (NSR).
The National Surf Reserve aims to share, protect and preserve this special place will ensure its safe keeping forever. Few other places embody the connection of our famed Australian surf culture as classically as the love affair that surfers have enjoyed with their beloved Crescent Head.
Crescent Head lies in the middle of the eastern border of the lands of the Dunghutti people. Dunghutti people lived in harmony with the land and their pattern of life was governed by codes of conduct regarded as sacred, having been handed down through countless generations. The Dunghutti people crafted canoes from the bark of the canoe tree and used them whilst hunting and fishing in Killick Creek.
Mountain Designs GeoQuest will be held from the 6th to the 9th of June 2014.
