Born Survivor
Over 2,000 Born To Survive At Lowther Castle
Press Release / 07.04.2014

On the 5th April 2014, over 2,000 participants completed the latest Born Survivor obstacle course at Lowther Castle, Cumbria. The brainchild of an ex-Royal Marines’ Commando and Falkland’s veteran, the event featured over 30 specially designed and military inspired obstacles on a 10km course built within the confines of Lowther Estate.
Matt Leigh, Born Survivor’s general manager, said, “We’re delighted to have staged another incredible day for our participants at the magnificent Lowther Castle. This is only our second event and further to the success of last year we’ve been able to double the numbers of those taking part. We had individuals and groups from across the U.K join us on the day, with some teams bringing over 100 people each. In doing so, we attracted an increased range of abilities, including two exceptionally tough athletes who, with the help of a dedicated team, completed the course in wheelchairs!”
With the assistance of Lancaster based VVV Health Club, Shaun Gash and Andy Hartley successfully completed the Born Survivor course in their wheelchairs in aid of Lancaster Bulldogs’ junior basketball club which is raising money to purchase equipment designed to help disabled children to take part.
At the finish line Shaun Gash said, "23 years in a wheelchair and, apart from marriage and the birth of my kids, this has been the greatest moment in my life. It was an awesome day out and we'd like to thank Born Survivor for allowing us to take part this way. Raising money for charity is always tough and making our challenges more extreme, like we did today, helps us raise more money for Lancaster Bulldogs, which is such a worthy cause. The only problem now is I've got to go home to wash my wheelchair!"
With 9 waves of up to 350 people setting off every half hour, the course started and finished at the Born Survivor event village, where festival inspired food, drink, entertainment and live music were made available for both participants and the estimated 1,000 spectators. Born Survivor’s sponsors were in attendance on the day and included the UK’s official X-BIONIC® distributor, Grizzly Active and 9Bar, alongside the event’s nominated charities: The Soldiers’ Charity and Unique Kidz.
Matt Leigh said, “With another event successfully delivered, we’ve opened entries for the next Born Survivor, which takes place at Capesthorne Hall near Manchester on the 27th September. But we’re not happy to rest on our laurels and our next event is going to be even bigger and better. So much so, we’re breaking new ground in the obstacle course world by staging a full marathon, as well as our usual 10km course. Interest in this has been astonishing and with limited places for the 42km course, entries are already coming thick and fast.”
