Yukon Artic Ultra
On her way - Feb 10th Report
Till Gottbrath / 12.02.2015

Nicole is still at dog grave lake together with a big group of athletes and doing well. Other than planned, they were allowed to stay in a tent with fire. She reports that lots of her clothes are frozen and hopes to dry some of it. Other than that she is in good mood and has no plans to push it to the limits. “I might miss the cut off time and then be taken out of the race. But safety and health is more important to me. The nights are very, very cold.” She says that they want to move on in a group.
While still being at home Nicole tried to gain some wait. Early explorers such as Nansen and Amundsen tried to get fat as seal babies. Quiet smart, as the fat on your body is available anytime. Unfortunately, this plan didn’t work on Nicole. No matter how much she ate, she didn’t gain any weight.
During the race she eats her self-made flapjacks / Muesli bars. She has had some bagles (but they are rock solid frozen). She eats dehydrated food – you only add hot water, let it soak and eat it. She eats Peronin, something like highly concentrated food that needs none of its energy content for the digestion process itself. Nicole said she found it very helpful last time. See http://www.peronin.net for details. And I think she has some Cathay, a very greasy stuff, inspired by Pemmikan, which North American Indians and Inuit prepared. http://www.pemmikan.de.
But if Nicole likes this diet, it doesn’t mean that it can be recommended to others. I know from my own trips that I like different things at home than on a winter trip. You have to find out yourself. Listen to you body, it will tell you.
