Nicole Is Scratched – But Still In Good Spirits
Till Gottbrath / 14.02.2015

Yesterday afternoon Nicole called to tell me that she is pulling out of the YAU. She has some pain in her legs, nothing serious yet, and that is why she's pulling out. It would have been possible to keep on walking but she was afraid that it might turn into something more serious that would keep her from being active for the next month or so. In addition she did want to have anybody rescue her from the track because she was not able to continue.
You may now think that she is very frustrated. Well, I am sure that it is frustrating for her. But Nicole is able to look at it from a positive side too: She is proud of herself that she is not “overambicious”. She is proud to be reasonable and able to make good decisions about herself and not wait until she MUST pull out.
What I liked about our phone call was her voice. It sounded good and positive. As she is doing well she is now changing roles and will work as a volunteer until the end of the race.
Many people have asked me whether I am bothered about her competing? Are you not afraid that something might happen to her? Actually, this had never occurred to me. And then I asked myself: Am I a bad husband? I think I am not. I knew that she has a strong mind. Strong enough to take her to the finish if her body had been willing. Disciplined enough to take a longer break when it was too cold (which was what she actually did). Strong enough to say stop when it is wiser to do so – which is exactly what she did now.
