2,500 Complete Gruelling Born Survivor Obstacle Event At Lowther Castle
News Release / 07.04.2015

On the 4th April 2015, 2,500 participants completed the latest Born Survivor obstacle course at Lowther Castle, Cumbria. The brainchild of an ex-Royal Marines’ Commando and Falkland’s veteran, the event featured specially designed and military inspired obstacles on a 10km course built within the confines of Lowther Estate.
Kevin Bedford, Born Survivor’s event director, said, “It was an incredible day for our participants at Lowther Castle. This was our fourth event and the third time returning to the beautiful Lowther Estate, where our reputation as an event that’s ideal for big groups of friends, family and fundraisers is clearly growing. I’m delighted to say we had some massive teams take part, including the 300-strong Born Heroes charity team, which has already raised £35,000 in aid of Lancaster’s St John’s Hospice.
The hilly, off-road, course comprised 38 physically demanding obstacles and attracted a wide range of ages and abilities, including wheelchair athlete Shaun Gash and firefighter Eric Atherton who completed the course wearing his full breathing apparatus.
After a safety briefing and warm up delivered by a team of professional army PT’s, 10 waves of up to 300 people were set off throughout the day from the edge of the Born Survivor event village. Here, participants and spectators were able to enjoy changing facilities, bag storage, post-event massage, as well as festival style catering, live music, shops and attractions that included a pull-up competition and children’s obstacle course.
Kevin Bedford said, “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created in Born Survivor and it’s great to see so many people come and enjoy both the event and the Lake District over Easter weekend, many of whom we know are joining us for our next event in Manchester on the 26th September. Indeed, entries are already open for the next Born Survivor which takes place at the magnificent Capesthorne Hall, where we’re planning on attracting over 3,000 participants.
Born Survivor’s sponsors and partners were in attendance at Lowther Castle and included Grenade Nutrition, Cumbria University, Newton Rigg College, The 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, alongside the event’s nominated charities The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, The Soldiers’ Charity and Unique Kidz.
Safety, radio and paramedic cover was provided by Ambleside’s Mountain Trauma and Preston based Bowland Communications, with obstacle marshals provided by Lancaster’s FGH Security team.
