Patagonian Expedition Race
Godzone Adventure in Third Place at PC7
Rob Howard / 19.02.2016
The Godzone Adventure Team were the third to arrive at PC7 after the first trekking stage and an enthusiastic Nick Gracie said, “That was a great little trek!” When I asked if he meant it, he replied, “Yes, genuinely. There was some fantastic scenery.”
He said they had found a good track out of the forest at the end of the stage, and the finish would have been much harder but for that. “We camped out for most of the night so had plenty of sleep,” he said. “We were just below the pass so crossed at sunrise, which was perfect.”
The team all looked in reasonable shape after 3 of them had suffered with a vomiting bug for 24 to 36 hours, and although Jari Hiatt was still feeling the effects a little they seemed to have pulled through and even overtaken Merrell Adventure Addicts on the trek. They did trek with them for a while, but then separated. The team were surprised to hear how far ahead East Wind were and impressed with their performance, but were really focussed on their own race.
“We know we will hit the dark zone for kayaking,” said Gracie, “so we won’t push too hard on the ride and will take it steadily, especially with Jari still feeling under the weather.”
Like all the top teams they were effective and industrious in transition, packing as much weight as they could onto the bikes and trying to repair a damaged inner tube on Jari’s bike, then replacing it. They were deciding what to wear for riding through the night and had left transition before there was any sign of Merrell Adventure Addicts coming in.
Unfortunately we also had to leave the transition then, so we never saw any more teams come in and will have to wait for timing updates from the race to find out when Merrell and the other following teams arrived.
