Patagonian Expedition Race
YogaSlackers - Pushing Through the Pain
Rob Howard / 23.02.2016
Just after midnight YogaSlackers arrived at PC12 with Jason Magness supported on either side as he hobbled along the fiord shore in the bright moonlight. The team had taken nearly 60 hours to complete the hardest trekking stage of the race, against all the odds, and in Jason’s case, despite the pain of his hip. Huddled in one of the marshal’s tents on arrival, the team’s first priority was to eat as they had run out of food long ago. They were helped by Team East Wind who shared some of their food, an act of generosity that gave the YogaSlackers a boost when they most needed it. They were surprised to see East Wind too, not knowing they’d resumed the race, and inspired by Masato Tanaka’s determination to keep going.
Magness said, ‘We adventure race to see what can be done, so we’ve taken each stage at a time to see if we could continue and now we have a whole day of rest before deciding whether to go on. That’s ideal for us and we can see how we feel and talk about the situation. We’re motivated to see what can be achieved and by racing against the great teams here. We know they will all have their problems too and they won’t give up, and though we may want to beat them, we are happy just to be racing with them and to be here in Patagonia.’
‘These guys have had to support me either side all the way downhill for the last 10km and it’s been like that all the way. Sometimes the pain is so bad I just have to stop and rest for a bit, and that’s why we took so long on this trek.’ Speaking to his team mates before going into the forest to camp he finished, ‘Thank you for one of the hardest and the most rewarding experience of my life.’
