Patagonian Expedition Race
Mind Over Body Arrive in 5th Place
Rob Howard / 23.02.2016
Team Mind Over Body were the 5th team to arrive at Last Hope Camp, walking in along the shore around 11.00 am this morning. The Canadian team were greeted with loud cheers and claps from what is now a bustling camp. Having passed CP11 yesterday evening they had been expected last night but explained that the weather was really bad.
‘It was snowing and a real blizzard’ said David Lebrun, ‘so we stopped for 6 hours and camped out. I don’t think we could have found the PC in that weather anyway.’
‘We were trekking in places where we saw the footprints of other teams,’ said Sandra Baribeau, ‘and it seemed impossible anyone could have been to such a wild place before. l didn’t really expect it to be so extreme in an organised race as they are usually so safety conscious, but we are all experienced mountaineers so are used to similar country in Canada.’
The team all looked to be in good shape and were sitting out on the edge of the forest looking out to the Balmaceda towers and glaciers across the water, then set off to find a site for their tent in the forest. They were surprised to hear so few teams are still in the race and are now in position for a top 5, or maybe higher, placing, but are sticking to their goal of just wanting to finish the race, which is achievement enough. They know all their family and friends are rooting for them at home and said the GoPro they are using to record the trip was a surprise present from their families. The camp is now waiting for Norcal Odyssey. Patagonia 4 Barth has already retired back to CP10.
